How To Improve A Player - No Matter What Level

Updated: May 24, 2021

There are a few key points that can take a player from being average to the next level of their game.

⚽ HOW TO IMPROVE A PLAYER 🏆

WORK ON A COUPLE OF THE POINTS BELOW TO SEE IMPROVEMENT IN YOUR PLAYERS, NO MATTER WHAT LEVEL.

Firstly you need to know that there are two key moments during a game, it may seem pretty obvious but here they are:

BALL POSSESSION (BP) - The time when your team has the ball

BALL POSSESSION OPPONENT (BPO) - The time when the opponent has the ball

Let's focus on Ball Possession for this post with and what aspects of a player you can improve.

The main actions that occur during BP are:

A. Positioning

B. First Touch

C. Running with the Ball

D. 1v1

E. Striking the Ball

F. Communicating

Here are some ideas on the first two points...

A. POSITIONING

You may have a new player that hasn't played much football before, they are young or perhaps they've only played Futsal before. In this case their Positioning may be lacking. So spend extra time breaking down stages during a game and where they should be on the ground. For example, if they are playing as a right full back you may let them know not to be too close to the centre backs when we have possession (BP). Also not to drop any deeper than the centre backs as this will affect how they play the offside.

B. FIRST TOUCH

In regards to First Touch, they may be an absolute gun athlete but there first touch is always hit and miss. To improve this get them to training earlier and work on it with them passing and controlling at different distances. Then give them a ball to take home and tell them to pass it against a wall, with a friend or the back of the couch for 10-20 minutes each day (get them to film it and send it to you to make sure they are doing it!).

In the coming weeks I'll be focusing on the other aspects you as a coach can help players improve on.

To be continued.....
